Today, Assembly Members Baldwin Day, Silvers, and Volland published AR 2026-35, a resolution to reaffirm the Assembly's commitment to defend the U.S. Constitution and call upon the Alaska Congressional Delegation to pass legislation reforming federal immigration enforcement operations, which has been submitted to the Anchorage Assembly for action at the February 3 Regular Assembly Meeting, with the following statement:

"When our neighbors elected us to the Anchorage Assembly, we each swore an oath of office to support and defend the Constitution of the United States, the Constitution of the State of Alaska, and the Charter of the Municipality of Anchorage.

As immigration enforcement activity escalates, the situation demands that we reassert the constitutional rights of the people, including the right to free speech and peaceful assembly, the right to keep and bear arms, the right to be free from unreasonable searches, and the right to not be detained without due process of law. These are the bedrock principles of a government built by the people for the people.

Local leaders are equally responsible for protecting the integrity of our democracy and the safety of our neighbors. Today, we call upon our colleagues to reaffirm our commitment to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States and leverage our legislative power to urge our congressional leadership to make concrete changes to protect the rights of the people."

Assembly Member Erin Baldwin Day announced the resolution was in development during a moment of personal privilege at the Regular Assembly Meeting this week. In addition to affirming Constitutional rights, the resolution calls upon the Alaska Congressional Delegation to assert legislative power for the following measures:

  • launch independent investigations into the use of deadly force by federal agents;
  • establish transparency in the identity of immigration enforcement agents;
  • increase training and regulation of immigration enforcement agents;
  • meaningfully reform enforcement practices to align with constitutional principles and international human rights law;
  • restrict federal funds for immigration enforcement operations until such measures are fully implemented.

The resolution will appear before the Anchorage Assembly as a resolution for action at the February 3 Regular Assembly Meeting.
