Trump Abruptly Bails on Meeting with Democratic Leaders & Then Demands Democrats Bail Him Out

WASHINGTON, DC - A week from today, funding for the government expires at midnight on September 30. Today, President Donald Trump reversed himself and abruptly cancelled a bipartisan meeting with Democratic leadership in the Oval Office to discuss efforts to avoid a federal government shutdown.

Today, U.S. Senator Jack Reed issued the following statement:

"Donald Trump is making a mess of our economy and health care system. He's recklessly raising prices and taking a bigger bite out of average people's paychecks while placing a heavier burden on state budgets, all while giving billionaires a bigger tax windfall.

"Democrats put forward a proposal that actually won more votes than Trump's. We have offered President Trump a clear plan to address rising costs and provide a bipartisan offramp to avoid a shutdown, but so far, he refuses to even talk about it.

"If Donald Trump thinks he can bail on negotiations and then expect Senate Democrats to bail him out as he worsens the health care crisis, fuels inflation, forces people to pay more, and undermines our states then he is sorely mistaken.

"Even Senate Republicans have admitted to the press that this impasse is avoidable and solvable but Donald Trump himself is the hold up. The sooner the White House reschedules the meeting or sends someone who is capable of negotiating, the sooner we can reach a compromise and get the government working better for the American people."
