Three events planned at OUWB as part of Women in Medicine Month

In honor of Women in Medicine Month, Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine will host several events to promote knowledge, address changes, and inspire women.

Established by the American Medical Association and held annually in September, Women in Medicine Month aims to empower current and future female medical professionals in all areas.

OUWB's Center for Excellence in Medical Education (CEME) will present three different programs: "Breaking Barriers for Women in Surgery," "She Leads, We Heal: Advancing Gender Equity in Medicine," and the "Intersection of Politics and Reproductive Healthcare: A Current Update." The events are free and open to the Oakland University, OUWB, and Corewell Health community.

Ann Voorheis-Sargent, Ph.D., director, CEME, promised that "participants will gain important and useful information."

"Our goal is to focus on issues that are timely and relevant for women," she said. "I hope that our sessions provide our participants an opportunity to reflect and realize that there are many issues that women face, and we are not alone in those encounters."

Here's more on each event:

Breaking Barriers for Women in Surgery, Sept. 16, 8 - 9 a.m., Virtually via Zoom

In this session, Sarah Temkin, M.D., a gynecologic oncologist, will use the documentary she directed as a centerpiece to a discussion on challenges that women today still face in medicine. "1001 Cuts" explores "the experiences of women in the high-stakes professional world of surgery." According to a description of the film, dozens of female surgeons "share their experiences from years of routine gender harassment and discrimination and offer hope and insights for the creation of a more inclusive future."

She Leads, We Heal: Advancing Gender Equity in Medicine, Sept. 17, 9:30 - 10:30 a.m., Virtually via Zoom

Tonya Bailey, Ph.D., associate dean for Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion and Community Engagement, is the leader of this interactive session that will illuminate the several institutional challenges women in medicine face daily. Challenges identified in a description of the session include unfair evaluations, unequal pay, and a lack of female presence in top positions.

Intersection of Politics and Reproductive Healthcare: A Current Update, Sept. 29, Noon - 1 p.m., Virtually via Zoom

Amy Whitten, M.D, associate professor, Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, will be leading the discussion on reproductive health care. By engaging in this conversation, participants will gain a better understanding of current abortion laws, history, which laws affect practice, and the coverage of all information specific to the state of Michigan.
