BILALEVU CEMETERY CROSSING COMMISSIONED
The Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industry, Hon. Charan Jeath Singh, today officially commissioned the Bilalevu Cemetery Crossing Project, delivering long-awaited relief to families of Navula, Loma, Bita, Bilalevu, Tuvuto, and surrounding settlements.
Minister Singh said the project reflects the shared commitment of the community and the Coalition Government, with support from the Ministry of Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industry. He noted that the project was made possible through the Community Grant initiative, which enables Government to partner directly with grassroots groups to improve facilities that uplift the daily lives of ordinary Fijians.
The Bilalevu Cemetery Crossing addresses a long-standing challenge faced by families who were often cut off from accessing the cemetery during wet seasons due to flooding.
"This bridge ensures families can reach the cemetery with dignity, even in difficult weather. It responds to the very mission of my Ministry-to strengthen harmony and mutual respect among Fiji's communities by supporting projects that meet their most heartfelt needs," Minister Singh said.
The project was made possible through a shared-cost arrangement, with Government contributing $8,000 and the balance raised by the Bilalevu Cemetery Committee.
Mr. Shiu Pratap, Secretary of the Bilalevu Cemetery Committee, said the new crossing has turned a painful chapter into a story of hope, recalling times when relatives almost lost their lives trying to cross floodwaters during funerals.
"This bridge means families will no longer risk their lives just to say their final goodbyes. It gives our loved ones the dignity they deserve, and gives us peace of mind," he said.
The commissioning of the Bilalevu Cemetery Crossing stands as a symbol of shared responsibility, where Government support amplifies community leadership for the benefit of all.
