Ranking Member Shaheen Statement on Trump-Xi Discussion on TikTok Deal

WASHINGTON - Today, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, released the following statement on President Trump and President Xi's call on a deal to keep the TikTok app operational in the United States:

"Today's call between President Trump and Xi Jinping reinforced my grave concern that Trump is dealing with Beijing from a position of weakness after systematically undercutting America's ability to compete with our greatest geopolitical threat. There is zero clarity regarding how Americans on TikTok will be protected from Chinese government control. We are mired in a trade war with no way out and mounting costs for American families and businesses. Meanwhile, China remains the world's largest importer of Russian oil and Moscow's biggest supplier of technology for Putin's illegal war in Ukraine yet President Trump refuses to hold Beijing accountable.

"As Senate Foreign Relations Democrats outlined in our report, The Price of Retreat, this summer, China is seizing advantage in the wake of Trump's disastrous retreat from U.S. global leadership. While Trump wages trade wars against our closest allies and partners, China is launching new initiatives to remake the world order. This deal will no doubt leave the United States on weaker footing to confront the generational challenge that China poses to our security and prosperity."
