President Alar Karis met with General Alexus Gregory Grynkewich, NATO's Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), in Kadriorg today. Together they discussed European security, the alliance's defence plans and the bolstering of its presence in the light of the persistent threat from Russia.
Speaking about NATO's defence and deterrence posture, President Karis underscored the importance of the alliance's new defence plans, which mark a major step forward in its collective defence. "Estonia takes its defence very seriously," the head of state remarked. "We are investing 5% of our GDP in defence, more precisely in the actual military capabilities that are needed in NATO's plans. The threat posed by Russia is not restricted to the alliance's eastern flank, but affects NATO, and indeed Europe, as a whole. That is why I call on all other member countries to be resolute in raising their defence spending."
President Karis and General Grynkewich also talked about the night-time drone and missile attack launched by Russia that was responded to by both Polish and NATO fighters. "These attacks show how important it is for us to stand together with Ukraine, with Poland and with all of our allies," the head of state said. "Joint action is the best answer we can give to an aggressor who is endangering the peace and security of Europe."
Military support for Ukraine, including credible security guarantees, and NATO's joint action against Russia's shadow fleet were also discussed during the meeting.
