111 future doctors celebrate successful Match Day at Geisinger’s School of Medicine

SCRANTON - Today 111 soon-to-be graduates of Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine learned their residency placements during the National Resident Matching Program's "Match Day," an event at which all fourth-year M.D. students around the country simultaneously open their envelopes to learn where they will spend the next three to seven years training in their chosen specialty.

"Once again, our School of Medicine celebrated a successful Match Day," said Julie Byerley, M.D., M.P.H., president of Geisinger College of Health Sciences, dean of the School of Medicine and executive vice president and chief academic officer, Geisinger. "Our students matched into excellent local residency programs, as well as some of the most competitive and prestigious programs and specialties in the nation. And because our focus is on caring for our own communities, I am particularly pleased to note that 23 students matched at Geisinger, making it more likely that they will remain in our region. Additionally, the 36 Abigail Geisinger Scholars in the Class of 2026 matched - and all will eventually work at Geisinger caring for our neighbors."

At the Match Day event held at the Scranton Cultural Center, Dr. Byerley addressed the Class of 2026 saying, "Today, your students' dreams come true as you get your first job as a doctor! But our dreams as an institution are also coming true as we produce the physician workforce our communities need. Today is a big step in your transition from learner to healer, and it's also a great day for us, the faculty and staff, to celebrate the fruits of our work."

In addition to the School of Medicine's celebration in Scranton, Geisinger hospitals learned who will be arriving this summer to begin residencies across the system. Dr. Byerley noted that Geisinger hospitals successfully matched 158 learners into 31 residency programs in today's Match. In the pharmacy residency match, Geisinger hospitals successfully matched 20 new pharmacy residents. In addition, four current pharmacy residents will be promoted to second year positions.
