The phone rings at Houston Christian University's Admissions Office, and Joshua Raines answers with his characteristic warmth. On the other end could be a working mother of two or a student in India, both wondering if they can really pursue their degree while juggling a full-time job and family responsibilities.
Since joining HCU in February 2023, Raines has been on the front lines of a quiet revolution happening. As an Online Admissions Counselor, he's witnessed firsthand the significant growth of the University's online division-a transformation that's opening doors for students who once thought A Higher Education was out of reach.
Raines's passion for helping students navigate the academic landscape began years ago when he was a community college student, working in the admissions office while pursuing his associate degree.
Those experiences taught him something invaluable: Education isn't just about degrees-it's about transformation.
"Being a student myself helped me relate with students on a personal level regarding the stresses and challenges that come with academic pursuits," Raines reflects. That empathy now shapes every conversation he has with prospective students, many of whom are juggling responsibilities he understands all too well.
One of the most common concerns Raines hears is one he's determined to dispel: Not having enough time.
"One of the awesome things about our online programs is that they do not have any required login sessions or login times," he explains. "We have many students who are enrolled online and work a full-time job, have a family, and other responsibilities to take care of."
This flexibility isn't just a convenience-it's a lifeline. It means a single parent can study after the kids are asleep, a full-time professional can work toward a career change without sacrificing their livelihood and a caregiver can pursue their dreams while still being present for their loved ones.
But what truly sets HCU's online division apart, according to Raines, isn't the technology or the flexibility-it's the mission.
"We are playing a part in a mission that's greater than ourselves," he says with conviction. "We want students to pursue and achieve their academic goals, but at the end of the day, we want to see the lives of our students be changed through a growing relationship with Jesus Christ."
As online education continues to surge in popularity nationwide, Raines sees HCU's Christian digital offerings poised for even greater growth.
"I see our online division growing and reaching more prospective students," he says. "I'm excited to be part of the growth that's already taken place and look forward to the further impact that we will make in the future."
For students worried that online learning means learning alone, Raines offers reassurance rooted in experience. While he understands the preference for in-person interaction, he's seen countless students thrive in HCU's online environment through communication and commitment.
"Students can have engaging interactions with their peers and professors while being enrolled in an online program with HCU," he emphasizes. "We try our best to make sure that students are aware of the help and support that is available to them."
That support system extends beyond the digital classroom. The HCU online team operates like a family-a word Raines uses deliberately and proudly.
"I know and work with so many genuinely wonderful people that have been a blessing in my life and it's awesome to connect not only on a professional level, but a personal one as well," he shares. "I want online students to know that there are many people on our team from all walks of life that can relate to the challenges they face with education and with life."
In an age where education can feel increasingly transactional, Raines and HCU's values represent something different. The approach goes beyond merely processing applications; it's actualizing buried callings and matching students with programs that fit their lifestyle while walking alongside them through those crucial first steps.
"As the first point of contact for prospects looking to further their education, it's important for me to answer any questions to provide clarity on our process," he explains.
But it goes deeper than that. Each conversation is an opportunity to remind students that they're not just enrolling in a program-they're joining a community.
His message to every prospective online student is heartfelt: "I would love for them to know that we are truly here to help."
As Houston Christian University's online division continues to expand, reaching students across the country and around the world, Raines believes the sky is the limit. In an increasingly digital landscape, the University is proving that Christian education can be accessible, transformational and deeply personal.
For Raines, being part of this growth means more than professional satisfaction. It means being part of something that makes a real difference in people's lives-professionally, academically and spiritually.
"It gives me confidence knowing that here at HCU, our students are getting a quality education that not only allows them to get a degree, but that makes an impact on their lives." he says. "Being able to play a part in that journey means that I get to be part of making a sincere difference and I'm thankful for that."
In the quiet moments between phone calls and application reviews, Raines thinks about the mother who called that morning, about the career changer who emailed last night and the dozens of students whose lives will be transformed through HCU's online programs.
And he knows for both students and our Online Division, this is just the beginning of an exciting new era.
