Following changes to the vaccine schedule, 30+ healthcare organizations sent an open letter to payers and insurers calling for continued access to the COVID-19 vaccine during pregnancy
June 11, 2025
AAPA and APAOG have joined the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and numerous other organizations dedicated to public health and evidence-based healthcare in an open letter to payers and insurers. The letter urges them to continue making the COVID-19 vaccine available to pregnant people without excessive administrative hurdles or cost-sharing requirements.
"We are particularly passionate about ensuring equitable and free access to these critical vaccines. We are deeply concerned about the recently adopted HHS policy to no longer recommend COVID-19 vaccination during pregnancy," the organizations wrote. "Given the historic gaps in research, investment, and support for women's health, it is essential that all aspects of obstetric and gynecologic care-including COVID-19 vaccination-be grounded in the best available scientific evidence."

On May 27, 2025, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) would no longer recommend routine COVID-19 vaccination for healthy children and pregnant women. These changes mark a departure from the recommendations that were previously in place.
AAPA is thoroughly evaluating the recommended changes to the vaccine schedule and monitoring the evolving practice guidance. Over the next month, AAPA and its clinical leaders are assessing the new guidance and recommendations for members.
