Waynesburg U. Dept. of Education recognizes future educators at annual Celebration of Teaching

The Department of Education at Waynesburg University recently honored its future educators during the annual Celebration of Teaching, held April 23 in Alumni Hall. The event marked a meaningful milestone for education students as they reflected on their academic journeys and looked ahead to careers in the classroom.

Hosted by the Department of Education for the past 15 years, the Celebration of Teaching recognizes students as they complete key stages of their education programs, while highlighting their growth in their chosen field of study.

"The Celebration of Teaching at Waynesburg University is designed to honor and recognize future educators as they complete their programs, while also celebrating their growth, dedication and commitment to the teaching profession," said Melissa Wood, field placement and certification coordinator.

The event brought together students, faculty and families for a time of reflection and inspiration. Graduating seniors shared impactful memories from their time at Waynesburg and offered advice to underclassmen as they prepare for their own journeys into the field of education.

A highlight of the event was the recognition of graduating seniors as they transition into professional teaching careers. Seniors were presented with "teacher survival kits" to support them as they enter their own classrooms, while underclassmen received symbolic gifts representing their progress through the program.

Faculty members, including Wood, Dr. Kelley Solomon, Kelsey Sprowls and Lauren Werner, offered remarks recognizing students' professional growth and reaffirming the lasting impact teachers have on their students.

A central theme throughout the program was the importance of making a difference one student at a time, inspired by the popular tale "The Starfish Story," which illustrates how even small acts can have profound effects.

Wood noted that the event serves as an important reminder for students to reflect on how far they have come through coursework, field placements and student teaching experiences.

"Watching our students grow into confident, compassionate educators is such a blessing," said Wood. "The Celebration of Teaching reminds us that God has a purpose for each of them, and their classrooms will become places where that purpose is lived out daily."
