Briar Cliff Hosts High School Art Critique Day

March 13, 2026

Briar Cliff University welcomed high school artists from across the Siouxland region to campus last Friday for its High School Art Critique Day, hosted by the Briar Cliff Art Program.

Held in the Clausen Art Gallery and North Hall studios, the event brought approximately 60 students together for a morning focused on artistic growth, collaboration, and creative exploration. Each student submitted an original piece of artwork, which was displayed in the gallery as part of a temporary exhibition.

The day began with an introduction to the critique process, giving students insight into how artwork is discussed and evaluated at the collegiate level. Students then participated in guided, college-style critiques of their own work, engaging in thoughtful dialogue about technique, concept, and presentation.

In addition to the critique experience, students took part in a collaborative art project led by Briar Cliff Art Education students. The hands-on workshop provided an opportunity for participants to create alongside peers while experiencing the university's studio environment.

The event concluded with a reception in the gallery, welcoming students, teachers, families, and friends to celebrate the participants' work and accomplishments.

High School Art Critique Day builds on the momentum of the recent Siouxland Art Educators Exhibition and reflects Briar Cliff's continued commitment to supporting local art educators and fostering connections with the region's creative community. By inviting students to campus, the University aims to provide meaningful, early exposure to the college-level art experience while showcasing the strength of its art program and facilities.
