Singer Bill Helping Students Access Financial Aid Passes Senate

The New Jersey Senate passed bipartisan legislation sponsored by Senator Robert Singer (R-Monmouth, Ocean) that builds on legislative efforts to help high school students apply to college and receive more financial aid.

In 2024, Governor Murphy signed Senator Singer's bill requiring the classes of 2024, 2025, and 2026 to submit a financial aid application as a prerequisite to receiving a diploma from a public or charter school. Under Senator Singer's bill, S-3245, those requirements would be made permanent for all graduating classes going forward, with certain exemptions.

"For high school students and their families, the cost of college can feel overwhelming," said Senator Singer. "Requiring students to complete financial aid applications helps ensure they have access to every available scholarship and grant they may qualify for, reducing out-of-pocket expenses and helping prevent decades of debt payments after graduation."
