Following Trump’s Bigoted Crusade Against LGBTQ Community, Leader Schumer, Senator Gillibrand, & Representative Goldman Formally Introduce Legislation To Protect The Pride Flag[...]

Washington, D.C. - Today, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), and Representative Dan Goldman (D-NY) formally introduced legislation to make the pride flag a congressionally authorized flag, protecting it from future attacks from the Trump administration.

Today, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), along with Senator Kristen Gillibrand (D-NY) and Representative Dan Goldman (D-NY) - in response to the Trump administration's attempted removal of the historic pride flag from the Stonewall Monument in New York - formally introduced legislation that would give the pride flag the designation of a congressionally authorized flag, thereby preventing its removal by the Trump administration in the future. Additionally, the legislation expresses a sense of the Senate that the pride flag should fly at the Stonewall Monument.

"Stonewall stands as a beacon of hope for the LGBTQ community - a reminder of the resilience and perseverance of those before us who fought for the rights they deserve. Stonewall is sacred ground and Congress must act now to permanently protect the pride flag and what it stands for," said Leader Schumer. "Trump's hateful crusade must end. The very core of American identity is liberty and justice for all - and that is what this legislation would protect: each national park's ability to make their own decision about what flag can be flown. Attempts to hurt New York and the LGTBQ community simply won't fly, but the Stonewall Pride flag always will."

"President Trump's removal of the Pride flag at Stonewall was just the latest in an endless series of gratuitous and cruel attacks on the LGBTQ+ community. The day after his administration removed the flag, we went to Stonewall to put it right back up," said Representative Goldman. "Now, we're introducing legislation to make sure it can't be taken down again. This legislation will guarantee that the Pride flag can fly again as a symbol of justice and equality for all - at Stonewall, and at all national parks across our country. We will not let Donald Trump erase history."

"Stonewall is the birthplace of the modern LGBTQ+ movement, and removing the rainbow flag was a blatant attempt to erase our nation's history," said Senator Gillibrand. "We can't let this sort of hateful act happen ever again. The strength and resilience of LGBTQ+ Americans, and those who stand with them, will not be erased. I am proud to cosponsor this legislation to protect the Pride flag and those it represents, and I will continue to stand up to the Trump administration's repeated attacks on the LGBTQ+ community."

As a Senator, Leader Schumer has been a strong voice for the LGBTQ community. Earlier this month, Leader Schumer, along with Senator Gillibrand (D-NY) and Representative Goldman (D-NY), wrote to Secretary Burgum slamming the Trump administration's decision to remove the Pride flag from the Stonewall National Monument and calling for its immediate restoration. During Pride month last year, Leader Schumer slammed the Trump administration for targeting LGBTQ Americans for their cruel cuts to programs used to diagnose, treat and prevent HIV/AIDS prevention cuts, calling on RFK Jr. to reverse billions in cuts and stand down from making LGBTQ community a target of his extreme agenda. Additionally, when Leader Schumer was the Majority Leader, he fought hard to pass the bipartisan Respect for Marriage Act, which provided federal protections for same-sex marriage in the case that the Supreme Court ever overturns Obergefell v. Hodges. The legislation was signed into Law by President Biden in 2022.
