Minister for Foreign Affairs and Research Vivian Motzfeldt's statement regarding the news about US special envoy Jeff Landry.

The Government of Greenland has not been informed about the plans for the appointment of a U.S. special envoy to Greenland by the United States of America. We have recently met with the U.S. Ambassador to the Kingdom, Kenneth Howery. Ambassador Howery did not inform about these plans. This is not an expression of trust.

In Greenland nothing has changed. The future of our country is decided by the people of Greenland. We are not Danes. We are not Americans - and we do not wish to become so. We are Inuiaat Kalaallit - we are the people of Greenland. Our country belongs to us - it is not going to be controlled or owned by others.

When it comes to security and defense in the Arctic region, Greenland and the US need to cooperate. This cooperation has to be carried out by speaking to each other face-to-face in mutual respect and while respecting international law and democracy. Sending undermining messages through the press is detrimental to trust and the wish to strengthen cooperation between our countries.

We can meet at the political level. We expect that the United States of America is familiar with the democratic principles. And with Greenland's political position and values. We expect constructive and respectful dialogue. We also expect that the United States of America henceforth will express internally coordinated messages.

With best wishes for a Merry Christmas to all.
