16 journalists honoured with 9th Migration Media Award

Sixteen journalists have been recognised with the Migration Media Award for their noteworthy contributions to reporting on migration issues.

Introduced in 2015, the Migration Media Awards aim to honour excellence in journalism within the migration sector. Funded by the European Union (EU), this year marks the ninth edition of the awards, which celebrate impactful reporting in the public interest.

Michael Miller, the EU Head of Delegation and Ambassador to Bangladesh, served as the chief guest at the award ceremony, held at the AS Mahmud Seminar Hall of the Daily Star building in Dhaka on Sunday, 15 December 2024.

The awards were presented to the winners by Ambassador Miller, with Mahfuz Anam, Editor and Publisher of Bangladesh's leading English daily, The Daily Star, and Mohammad Shaheen, ndc, Joint Secretary (Development Division) of the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment, attending as special guests.

Asif Saleh, Executive Director of BRAC, chaired the event, which was also attended by the competition's judges and representatives from various national and international organisations.

The Migration Media Awards, introduced in 2015, aim to recognise journalistic contributions to the migration sector.

Shariful Hasan, Associate Director of BRAC's Migration and Youth Platform, delivered the keynote speech, while Safi Rahman Khan, Director of the Education, Skills Development, and Migration Programme, gave the welcome address.

The call for submissions for the Migration Media Award was published in the media and on social media platforms in January 2024. This year's jury panel included Dipok Kumar Roy, Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment; Professor Robaet Ferdous of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism at Dhaka University; Rahnuma Salam Khan, National Programme Manager at the International Labour Organisation (ILO); and Shahnaz Munni, former Chief News Editor of television channel News 24.

Ms. Kamrun Nahar and Md. Masum Billah of The Business Standard jointly secured first place in the national newspaper category this year. Saiful Masum of Ajker Potrika took second place and Md. Hasanuzzaman of Dainik Inqilab claimed third place. In the regional newspaper category, Shariful Islam of Ekushey Potrika was first, Iftekharul Islam of Daily Chattogram Khobor was second, and Md. Sahin Alam of Weekly Chauddagram secured third place.

Kafayet Ullah Chowdhury Shakil of Banglavision secured first place in the television news category, with Muhammad Rajibul Islam in camera. Channel 24's Md. Rasheduzzaman and S. I. Sumon took second place, while Md. Zakir Hossain Rana of Channel 24 and Md Tanver Hasan of RTV have secured the third place. Md. Nazmul Sayed and Kazi Mohammad Ismail of Independent Television programme Talash have received the award in the television programme category. Md. Badsha Mia of the National Broadcasting Company of the Islamic Republic of Iran and Radio Tehran received the award in the radio category.

Md. Jahangir Alam of jagonews24.com won first prize, while Ajoy Kundu of Prothom Alo won second place in the online newspaper category. Shakila Akhter of Khaborer Kagoj and Md. Saddaf Shorab of Bangla Tribune shared third place.

The winners received a crest, a certificate of recognition, and a prize money cheque.
