Today, Governor Tina Kotek issued a statement in response to the Trump Administration's attempt to undo the court-authorized benefits dispensed to Oregonians through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
"Oregon acted lawfully, given the federal court's directive and the communications with the USDA, and my decision to ensure SNAP benefits went out quickly was in direct alignment with my food emergency declaration. I am disgusted that President Trump has the audacity to take taxpayers' money away from them when they are in crisis. I have a question for the President: What would he prefer to spend the money on over groceries for people in need? This is ridiculous, immoral, and Oregon will fight this every step of the way."
Governor Kotek distributed SNAP benefits to all recipients on Thursday, November 6, with the federal dollars authorized by the courts. Though this matter is still being litigated, President Trump's demands have no impact on those dollars and SNAP users should continue to use their Oregon Trail Cards as they normally would.
The Governor's emergency declaration on food remains in place to make sure that Oregon can respond to any continued attempt to block food assistance by the federal government. Her office is monitoring the situation closely and working with Attorney General Dan Rayfield to fight to keep food on the table for Oregonians.
