Halsted Street bridge repairs begin Aug. 31

CHICAGO - The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that repairs to the bridge carrying Halsted Street over Thorn Creek (between 10^th Street and Illinois 1 Cutoff), in Chicago Heights, will begin, weather permitting, Monday, Aug. 31.

To complete the work, Halsted Street will be closed between Joe Orr Road and Lincoln Highway (U.S. 30). A detour will direct traffic to Lincoln Highway, Chicago and Joe Orr roads.

The project, which consists of repairing the bridge deck, approaches, replacing expansion joints, installing a new deck overlay and guardrail, is anticipated to be completed in December. ​

The public can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Alternate routes are encouraged. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.

Over the next six years, IDOT is planning to improve 7,107 lane miles of highway and 8.4 million square feet of bridge deck as part of Rebuild Illinois, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation. Accomplishments through Year Seven of Rebuild Illinois include $25.6 billion of improvements statewide to 24,498 lane miles of highway, 959 bridges and 1,475 additional safety improvements.
