Chair Cassidy on Federal Courts Ensuring Fairness for Women & Girls, Overturning Biden-Harris Title IX Rule

WASHINGTON - Today, U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA), chair of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, released a statement following a federal court striking down the Biden-Harris administration's Title IX rule. This policy would have redefined "sex" to include gender identity, eliminating legal protections for women and girls in American education. The Title IX standard will revert back to the Trump-era regulation.

"It is clear the Biden-Harris administration completely lost its way on Title IX. They betrayed the original intent of Title IX by removing longstanding protections that ensured fairness for women and girls. Good to see this harmful regulation overturned," said Dr. Cassidy. "With President Trump and a Republican majority in Congress, we will ensure women and girls have every opportunity to succeed on the field and in the classroom."

In June, Cassidy along with 34 Republican colleagues introduced a Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution of disapproval to overturn this regulation and preserve Title IX protections for women and girls.

Cassidy has also launched an investigation to better understand the impact of allowing biological men to compete against female athletes in competition. Previously, Cassidy released a preliminary report detailing powerful testimony from female athletes who experienced anguish and mental stress arising from competing against biological male athletes who have an inherent physical advantage.

Background

The new Biden-Harris administration rule extended Title IX protections to gender identity and sexual orientation, requiring institutions to allow biological males into female spaces like bathrooms, locker rooms, or any activity currently confined to male or female.

The final rule also threatened free speech on campus, protects teachers' unions, and hurts due process protections for students accused of sexual harassment on campus. Further, noncompliance with Title IX regulations jeopardizes all federal funds an institution receives.
