On July 22, 2026, just after 1:00 p.m., Winnipeg Police Service officers arrested a 20-year-old man regarding a carjacking that occurred in the parking lot of a retail business in the 1800 block of Portage Avenue.
Just after 12:30 p.m., the man approached the parked vehicle of a 52-year-old victim demanding property and cash. The victim refused and the suspect armed himself with a knife. A short physical encounter ensued which escalated where the suspect assaulted the victim with the knife. The victim fled and the suspect entered the taxicab and drove off, driving erratically to the point where he almost collided with both cyclists and pedestrians. Police were contacted.
The victim sustained minor injuries and received medical treatment.
West District General Patrol officers tracked the suspect to the 1900 block of Portage Avenue, where he was arrested after colliding with a chain link fence and an embankment.
The Major Crimes Unit assumed the investigation.
