Netherlands-based company Oyster Heaven is working to restore coastal ecosystems by developing scalable oyster reef restoration projects across Europe and beyond.
For them, oyster reefs are not just valuable marine life habitats. They also have practical benefits - like water filtration, habitat creation, and coastal resilience support.
"The beauty of oyster reefs is that they're solving multiple problems at once," explains George Birch, Founder & Business Lead.
The company was a finalist of the BlueInvest event, which enabled them to connect with entrepreneurs and funding partners.
At the centre of Oyster Heaven's restoration model is the Mother Reef. It is a scalable and low-cost alternative to materials used in restoration projects, like rock or concrete.
This clay structure provides a hard surface for oyster larvae to settle and grow.
To develop the projects, Oyster Heaven works with hatcheries to produce European flat oyster larvae, and collaborates with local fisheries, coastal organisations and restoration partners.
So far, they have developed 17 projects across seven countries.
Oysters act as natural water filters. Their reefs provide habitat for a variety of marine species. They contribute to coastal resilience, reducing the energy of incoming waves and helping stabilise seabed conditions.
There are clear ecological changes already in the first year. The growing oyster reefs create habitat for increasing marine species in degraded areas.
Blended Finance
Part of Oyster Heaven's success lies in:
The reef projects are tailored to the needs of water utilities, municipalities and insurers. That attracts a diverse range of funding partners, letting the company scale reef deployment while building an attractive platform for larger institutional investors.
Following an €800,000 seed investment from Orange Wings Investments in 2022, Oyster Heaven secured support from partners including Nestlé Purina, Rebalance Earth, and the West Yorkshire Pension Fund.
Oyster Heaven aims to make oyster reef restoration more widely accessible by developing technologies that can be easily adopted by governments, businesses and coastal communities.
The company has more than 20 restoration projects in development. They are preparing a new funding round to support project delivery and research.
In the long term, Oyster Heaven wants oyster restoration to become a standard tool for ecosystem recovery and coastal management.
Oyster Heaven participated in BlueInvest Day 2026, where it was selected as one of four finalists in the Ocean Resilience category from a pool of 82 companies.
The event provided an opportunity to showcase its restoration approach to investors, corporates and other blue economy actors.
Oyster Heaven also used the BlueInvest community to build relationships with entrepreneurs and funding partners.
According to George Birch, these connections strengthened their position in the blue economy and expanded their access to potential supporters and investors.
BlueInvest is the EU's innovation and investment platform for the blue economy, offering business coaching, fundraising support, and networking opportunities for ocean technology companies.
