On October 14, 2026, independent research organization the Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) released two companion issue briefs assessing how Medicaid Work Reporting Requirements could affect individuals applying for federal Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). The briefs highlight the populations of individuals in the application process for both programs and whether those individuals had Medicaid history.

For those with Medicaid histories, the briefs looked at the subset of applicants with Medicaid Expansion eligibility, meaning these individuals would be subject to work reporting requirements. Many of these individuals are over age 50, and by virtue of seeking SSI or SSDI are awaiting a disability determination. These individuals will now need to prove their disability to retain eligibility for Medicaid via expansion. Many of these individuals could be residents of affordable housing or be accessing some level of services provided by members.

Look for a deeper dive and their analysis on SSI and SSDI in their briefs.
