Cleaning Up the Voter Rolls in Sacramento County

Did you know that after every general election, voters who have not voted in two federal elections and have not updated their voter registration file get canceled and removed from the voter roll? This duty is one of the responsibilities of the Sacramento County Voter Registration & Elections (VRE) office under the National Voter Registration Act.

There were 56,086 Sacramento County voters who met these conditions during our most recent review. As a result, on March 18, 2025, VRE sent out postcards to these inactive voters letting them know that their voter registration would be removed from the voter roll.

Voters who receive the postcard must respond by today to keep their voter registration active and on the voter roll in Sacramento County. Voters who miss this deadline will have their registration canceled and need to re-register to vote.

What to do if you receive this postcard for a voter who no longer lives at your address:

Nothing! Our office will cancel the voter's registration on April 2, 2025.

What is this postcard for?

The postcard is called a pre-cancellation card and is used as a final notice to voters in Sacramento that their voter registration is being canceled. The deadline for response to this postcard is 15 days from the day it is sent.

Here are some of the other reasons we send out this postcard on a weekly basis.

  • Death
  • Conservatorship
  • Current incarceration for the conviction of a felony
