At the University of New Mexico's central campus, UNM Food and Aramark Collegiate Hospitality have partnered to launch Fare Share, a new meal access initiative designed to support the well-being of every Lobo. As food insecurity continues to affect college students nationwide, the program reflects a shared commitment to ensuring meals are within reach for everyone in the UNM community.
"This project stems from Aramark's commitment to community outreach, and my personal dedication to ensuring our campus community has access to nutritious, sustaining meals, especially for those who need them most, delivered in the most respectful, gentle and caring way possible," said Kiet Le, regional district manager.
Rooted in the values of access and community, Fare Share allows anyone with a valid Lobo ID to choose a price for their meal that fits their budget. Guests can order one entree, one side and one beverage per transaction at La Ventana in the Student Union Building. Whether a student needs to pay less or can contribute more, the program provides a welcoming, judgment-free experience that strengthens the sense of care across campus.
A philanthropic model supports the longevity of Fare Share. Contributions exceeding the listed menu price are donated directly to the Lobo Food Pantry. One hundred percent of these additional funds help expand food access resources across UNM, ensuring continued support for students experiencing food insecurity and strengthening the campus safety net.
"Fare Share is an innovative solution that reimagines the traditional retail experience by embedding both access and generosity into the same transaction," said Amanda Gerard, director of dining and hospitality. "It gives Lobos flexibility in the moment and strengthens our opportunity to support each other. We're proud to partner with Aramark on a model that is uncommon in higher education and to introduce this collaborative approach to expanding food access and bringing our campus community together."
Through this collaborative effort, UNM Food and Aramark Collegiate Hospitality are uniting generosity, dignity and nourishment in a program designed to support Lobos from all backgrounds.
