SEPTEMBER 29, 2025 Opinion By Chairwoman Amy Barela In Response To An ABQ Journal OPEDZohran Mamdani may inspire some progressives in New Mexico, but his platform is not one our state can mimic. Policies like rent freezes and fare-free transit may energize activists, but they are built on unstable fiscal ground and would push our state further into dependency and dysfunction. New Mexico needs leaders who bring forward ideas rooted in our own realities, not imported experiments from New York City.It is time for New Mexico to demand more accountability, more transparency, and more common-sense solutions. The direction we have been heading has left our families struggling with crime, poor education outcomes, and limited opportunity. If we want a better future for our children and grandchildren, we must change the direction of this state-and that begins with changing how we choose our leaders. As Abraham Lincoln urged, "We must disenthrall ourselves, and then we shall save our country." New Mexico must disenthrall itself from flashy promises and instead embrace the hard but necessary work of building a strong, safe, and prosperous state.
