Port Police Identify Truck Accident Victim

GALVESTON, TX (Saturday, Dec. 28, 2024) - Authorities have identified the body recovered from a submerged vehicle in Galveston Harbor as Cameron Sharman, a 32-year-old La Marque man. The body was recovered Friday from the cab of a 1999 Dodge Ram pickup truck that port security video shows driving from Pier 20 into the water at 2:14 a.m. Friday. Police have no witnesses to the accident.

Pier 20 is a working pier located in a commercial area of the port that is open to the public.

Port of Galveston police were alerted at approximately 11:30 a.m. Friday to the possibility of a submerged vehicle after public reports of a broken wooden railing on the pier.

Port police immediately launched an investigation and reviewed port security video, which showed a pickup truck driving into the water. The video camera, which faces the pier, did not capture footage of the roadway from which the truck came.

A port police patrol boat was dispatched to the scene shortly before noon. Port police used sonar to locate the vehicle at a depth of 29 feet.

According to Port of Galveston Police Chief Kenneth Brown, port police and Galveston Police Department divers coordinated recovery work. Due to poor visibility, police could not confirm if anyone was in the cab until the truck was brought to the surface.

A heavy-duty tow truck removed the vehicle from the water at 7:07 p.m. Friday, according to the Port of Galveston Police Department. Police believe that Sharman was the sole occupant of the truck when it went into the water.

Authorities are investigating the cause of death and details surrounding the incident. Anyone who may have details are asked to call the Port of Galveston Police Department, (409) 766-6169.

The multi-agency response included the Port of Galveston Police Department, Galveston Police Department Marine Dive Team and Accident Investigation, Galveston County Sheriff's Office Marine Division, the Galveston County Medical Examiner, and the Galveston County District Attorney's Office.
