Drew Gifts Sarah Paulson an Original Playbill From Her First Show on Broadway

Drew: Well, actually I have something for you. It's just a little tiny something. But it's the original playbill and the original card, stating -

Sarah: It says that the original role of Tess Good, usually played by Amy Ryan, will be played by Sarah Paulson. Look at my bio, by the way, there's like 3 credits. I had done nothing. This is very special. I have something for you too.

Drew: Wait, you're joking, right?

Sarah: I'm not joking. I have a present for you. People don't bring presents for you?

Drew: Oh my God, Ethel.

Sarah: It's Ethel. You have such, it's like a very specific Barrymore thing, but there's like a there's something happening in the nose and the mouth that really looked -

Drew: Yeah it's the bow lip I wonder if she had a lisp.

Sarah: I don't know if she did, but I would like to know about it.

Drew: I mean she sort of she talked like they all, yeah.

Sarah: They all had that sort of old timey voice, yes.

Sarah on Finding Compassion for Her Characters and Advice from Steve McQueen for "12 Years a Slave"

Drew: I mean, I've been watching you as Eileen Wuornos. That first scene that I see you in has such a duality to it. In one minute, you seem like the most fierce and capable person, really almost the one who's in charge, and you flip it by turning your voice and body.

Sarah: She's so pretty.

Drew: Into a way where I know you're being hurt and it flips the script on me to oh this is not a person who's just so angry and bad, this is a person who's being hurt and this is her way of dealing with it, no justifications but -

Sarah: No justification of course, but people -

Drew: How do you have such pain in one minute and vulnerability but then strength in the next, like how do you do that as an actor?

Sarah: I certainly am not thinking about doing it, but I think the only thing I know I'm doing is trying to find some compassion for the person I'm playing and no judgment. I did this movie called '12 Years a Slave' with Steve McQueen a long time ago that was…and it's a very special movie and I play a really atrocious woman in the movie, and I remember our director Steve McQueen saying to me, 'If you judge her or if you pull back on any of her hideousness or her awful instincts or her terribleness as a person' you know, there are people out in the world who don't know how to behave like human beings and who knows what her story was, that was not the point of the movie but he really was like, 'I need you not to pass judgment on her because then you're going to try to soften it, and if you soften it, you're gonna weaken the impact of the character for the rest of the characters in the movie which is really what it's about' and he was absolutely right. And I know there were several actresses who were up for the part who didn't wanna do it because they were like it was gonna hurt their brand or something that they would play such an awful person and I was like, 'Oh, I want to do that' not because I want to play someone bad, but I wanted to play someone with a with a questionable moral compass.

Drew: I think you do have a brand actually, which is the unknown. I never know which version of you I'm gonna get.

Sarah on Her Eyebrow Party Trick and Early Feedback About Her Speech

Sarah: Here's my party trick. I didn't even know. I like, I have an eyebrow problem and I have to comb them all the time. I have a combing problem.

Drew: You have an eyebrow comb in your pocket. Can you do mine?

Sarah: Yours are really good. You've got great eyebrows. Remember when you had them so thin? There was a time when you had the skinniest eyebrows.

Drew: I had one row.

Sarah: But they were so chic, but I really am into these. These are great, and I love that you don't take any hair off the bottom of them. Leave them.

Drew: Thank you. I'm basically working like the full bald man's comb over. I haven't settled into the fact that like I have all these bald patches I have them drawn in but like what do you do when like your favorite one of your favorite assets starts to, I look like a bird who's like losing feathers.

Sarah: You're losing feathers. I love doing my Drew Barrymore impression. I just love the way you talk so much. I wanna like crawl inside your mouth. Like who talks like that? It's the greatest thing I've ever, like, it it's just like things are happening in there.

Drew: Sometimes I find I'm like drooling at this point.

Sarah: I have a sibilant s which is different than what you have. I was told early on when I was auditioning that I had a sibilant s and I wasn't gonna get jobs because I had to fix it, and I was like my teeth, like when my teeth are, no, I don't. My teeth are touching everywhere, but my tongue sticks out, so their tongue is not being stopped by the teeth, so it's just like a big problem.

Sarah on Changing Her Name in High School and Drew on What She Almost Named Her Daughters

Sarah: OK, so I really wanna know, thank you. If you could change your name, what would you change it to? Oh, I like this question.

Drew: Pepper, yeah, I love the name Pepper.

Sarah: Did you just come up with that now or is that genuinely a name you would be calling yourself.

Drew: I fought really hard for my daughter Olive to be named Pepper.

Sarah: And he was like, 'Absolutely not.' I love the name Pepper. It's so cute. It's a great name.

Drew: And then I wanted Frankie to be Pepper, and he was like, 'We can't have an Olive and a Pepper.' But what name would you pick?

Sarah: Well, you know, I changed my name in high school because I went to a performing arts high school here in New York City and I had I thought a very boring name. My name was Sarah with an H. It was very traditional, so I made everyone call me Sarah. I dyed my hair jet black and I wore like a lot of brown eye like lip liner and I made everyone call me Sarah. I was like don't call me Sarah.

Drew: And when did that phase out?

Sarah: Well, like when I, you know, grew up a little and I thought, 'Oh my name is, I like my name, Sarah is a pretty name, it's sweet.'
