What Does Casey’s Winning Streak Really Prove

For questions about this article or underlying research, email [email protected].

Casey's General Stores (CASY) ranks among the leading convenience store chains in the United States, and its stock has beaten the S&P 500 in each of the last five years. A track record like that looks like proof of an exceptional company. Take a guess: of about 480 large U.S. stocks, how many did the same?

How Rare Is Casey's Winning Streak?

The five-year stretch runs from October 2021 to October 2026, and Casey's beat the index in every one of those roughly twelve-month periods based on price changes before dividends.

Period The stock S&P 500
Oct 18, 2021 to Oct 18, 2022 +11.9% -17.1%
Oct 18, 2022 to Oct 19, 2023 +25.0% +15.0%
Oct 19, 2023 to Oct 21, 2024 +48.5% +36.8%
Oct 21, 2024 to Oct 23, 2025 +35.9% +15.1%
Oct 23, 2025 to Oct 26, 2026 +32.1% +13.9%

Price changes over periods of 252 trading sessions each, dividends excluded.

Only 7 of the 485 stocks measured matched that performance. Outperforming the index is the less common result in most years, and just 41.6% of these stocks managed it in the latest year. So trailing the index represents a normal year for a large stock, and beating it five years running is rare.

Could A Streak Like This Be Luck?

When tracking this many stocks, a few will assemble long streaks even if no single company holds an edge over the rest. Roughly four in ten of these stocks beat the index in a typical year. If market outperformance were entirely left to chance, randomly drawing a little over four in ten of those 485 names from a hat each year would result in about six names appearing every single time over a five-year span. Under pure chance, about six companies would be expected to build a five-year winning streak with no skill involved at all.

The actual total of 7 companies with such a streak sits barely above what luck alone would generate. While some of the seven may be there on merit and others by chance, the share price alone cannot separate the two.

Did Casey's Profit Grow Through The Streak?

Casey's sells fuel at its pumps and offers grocery, general merchandise, prepared food, and dispensed beverage inside its stores. The company's profit, measured as twelve-month net income including one-time items, rose in all five years of the streak. Net income climbed 148.1% over the entire stretch, while the stock advanced 272.8%. Rising profit explains most of that gain, and the rest came from investors paying about 50% more for each dollar of profit.

So Casey's streak had rising profit behind it in every year. That is evidence you can check in the company's own reports, but it is not proof of skill.

What To Watch Instead Of The Streak

Profit is still rising. During the September 9, 2026 call, management said net income rose 27% from a year earlier in fiscal Q1 2027, covering the three months to July 31, 2026. Prepared food and dispensed beverage led the way inside the stores, posting a 4.8% increase in same-store sales against 3.2% for inside sales as a whole. Management also said Casey's is on track to add 120 stores in fiscal 2027.

While the streak serves as a record of how the shares moved, profit indicates how the business itself is operating. When Casey's reports its fiscal second-quarter results, expected in December 2026, net income growth is the figure to watch.

Does This Mean You Should Act On CASY?

Our purpose is to inform you with unique data so you make the right investment decisions. That said, betting on a single stock is always risky, no matter which direction you choose.

There is a smarter approach. Since its inception, the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio has returned 105%, beating the benchmark that combines the three major indices - the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap, and Russell 2000. And it did so without taking the concentrated risk that comes with do-it-yourself stock picking. If that is how you want to invest, the HQ Portfolio is the place to start.
