On 26 April 2026, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus, Igor Sekreta, took part in a flower-laying ceremony at the memorials 'Victims of Chernobyl' and 'Hiroshima Peace Stone' on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident.
In a tribute to the memory of the liquidators and as a sign of respect for their heroic deeds, representatives of the embassies of Russia, Ukraine and Japan, as well as the leadership of the UN Country Team and the CIS Executive Committee, joined staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in laying flowers.
The event was timed to coincide with the International Chernobyl Disaster Remembrance Day, proclaimed in 2016 on the initiative of Belarus during the 71st session of the UN General Assembly in accordance with the Belarusian resolution 'Persistent legacy of the Chernobyl disaster', by which the General Assembly invited all Member States, relevant UN agencies and other international organisations, as well as civil society, to observe this day.
Today, Belarus serves as a unique source of knowledge and practical experience in the field of responding to such man-made disasters, minimising radioecological risks, rehabilitating ecosystems and protecting human health. Recognising the enormous potential of the Chernobyl legacy in the context of international cooperation, our country is open to constructive dialogue on this subject with the entire international community.
