Beginning Wednesday, December 3, 2025, the intersection of State Route 83 (Avon Lake Road) and State Route 162 (Chatham Road) will be converted to an all-way stop intersection, meaning all approaches to the intersection will be required to stop. Currently, this intersection operates as a two-way stop requiring only traffic along SR 162 to stop before entering or crossing SR 83.
A review of crash data between 2019-2023 reported 21 total crashes, 17 of which were angle crashes. As an outcome of the study, ODOT has decided to make the intersection an all-way stop in effort to improve safety at the intersection.
The all-way stop is being implemented in accordance with new traffic control guidelines from the Federal Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). While studies show that a roundabout would provide the greatest safety and service benefit at this intersection, a funding source for such a project has not been determined at this time. An all-way stop is the most cost-effective solution that can be implemented immediately to improve safety quickly. ODOT will continue to monitor the intersection to ensure the all-way stop is operating as intended.
Motorists will be alerted to upcoming changes starting Wednesday, November 19 through posted signage along SR 83 and SR 162.
