Green is planning an energy-efficient data center campus on a former ABB industrial site. In line with the existing supplementary plan, additional areas for industrial and commercial use as well as publicly accessible green spaces are to be created. The use of waste heat is intended to contribute to the circular economy.

Lupfig, October 26, 2026 - Green has acquired the Grossacher and Grändel site in Birr from ABB, covering an area of approximately 250,000 square meters. The industrial site, which has remained largely unused, was previously held by ABB as a strategic reserve and is no longer required for this purpose. Green plans to develop the site in phases into a future-oriented campus with data center infrastructure. This will enable the company to expand its capacity to meet the growing demand for local, energy-efficient infrastructure.

Green is one of the pioneers of Switzerland's data center industry and was an early driver of the development of highly available and resource-efficient data center infrastructure in Switzerland. With the new location in Birr, the company continues along this path and invests in Switzerland's long-term competitiveness as a business and digital location.

Developing an industrial site with the future in mind

The site will be developed in phases in accordance with the existing supplementary development plan. At the heart of the project is an energy-efficient data center campus designed to make waste heat available for use as process heat or in district heating networks. This approach connects digital infrastructure with the circular economy: Heat generated during data center operations can be reused as a valuable resource for other applications. In addition, Green's data centers can provide tertiary balancing power when needed, helping to support the stability of the Swiss electricity grid.

Green's data centers use closed-loop cooling systems in which water circulates without being consumed. This approach serves as the starting point for the design of the new project.

In addition to the data centers, the site is intended to include areas for industrial and commercial use as well as publicly accessible green spaces. Suitable uses will be identified in close coordination with the municipality of Birr and the canton of Aargau. The objective is a development that takes the region's needs into account, opens up new economic prospects, and integrates the site thoughtfully into its surroundings.

Strengthening digital sovereignty and economic autonomy

Switzerland is largely a service-based economy. Value creation in areas such as financial services, healthcare, research, commerce, and public administration now depends on digital applications and secure access to data. High-performance data centers provide an indispensable foundation for this.

Through its infrastructure, Green helps strengthen Switzerland's digital sovereignty and economic autonomy. Companies, public institutions, and cloud and technology providers gain access to high-performance capacity that enables the secure operation of digital services. Resilient digital infrastructure is therefore not only a technological prerequisite but also an important factor in the competitiveness and long-term independence of Switzerland as a business location.

"Green recognized early on the importance of data centers for the country's digital development and has played a lasting role in shaping the industry. With the campus in Birr, we are continuing this pioneering work," explains Roger Süess, CEO of Green, adding: "We are pleased to carry out this project in a region with which Green has been closely connected for many years. Together with the municipality and the canton, we want to develop the site for the future and create added value for the region."

Green has been rooted in the canton of Aargau for 30 years and is headquartered in the neighboring municipality of Lupfig. With this project, Green is making a significant investment in the region, jobs at Green, and the Swiss economy.

About Green

Green is the leading data center provider in Switzerland. The company currently operates seven data centers in the greater Zurich area, with two more under construction and initial projects in Germany in the planning stage. By building secure, highly available and energy-efficient data center capacity, Green is laying the foundation for connected, high-performance IT, cloud and AI environments for large companies and cloud providers. Green is the only Swiss provider to have the "M&O Stamp of Approval" for operational excellence from the Uptime Institute and has received multiple awards, including as a Swiss market leader for data centers and colocation, and for innovation in waste heat utilization and energy efficiency.
