Patient Bryan Booker arrived at HCA Florida Riverview Emergency with escalating chest congestion at 3:00am. The ER team quickly recognized signs of a possible heart condition and immediately provided oxygen support, diagnostic testing and cardiac and respiratory monitoring. They transferred him to HCA Florida Brandon Hospital, where he was admitted for a cardiac condition.
While hospitalized for his cardiac condition, Booker suffered an unexpected stroke. His nurses quickly recognized the symptoms and activated a stroke alert. The team moved quickly through assessment, screening and treatment and administered the lifesaving clot busting medication Tenecteplase (TNK) within 25 minutes.
"Due to the location of Bryan's stroke, it affected his speech and his ability to understand language. His nurses identified the stroke symptoms and initiated a stroke alert which accelerates Brandon Hospital's processes to ensure the best outcome," said Dr. Allauddin Khan, neurologist at Brandon Hospital.
HCA Florida Brandon Hospital is a Certified Comprehensive Stroke Center and consistently earns the American Heart Association's Get with Guidelines Stroke Gold Plus Achievement for Stroke.
Booker expressed his gratitude for the care he received at Brandon Hospital and Riverview Emergency.
"They know their patients. It contributes to their fast action; they were able to identify that something was wrong with me immediately. It was life changing. I don't know what condition I would be in right now if they hadn't moved so quickly," said Booker.
Booker now takes medication to strengthen his heart and doctors expect him to make a full recovery. Read about his life-saving care.
