NEW POLL: Trump Underwater in Michigan, Duggan Sinking Despite Massive Spending

As all of the Republicans running for governor in Michigan tie themselves to Donald Trump's agenda of cutting health care and jacking up costs, new polling in Michigan shows the president is deeply unpopular.

According to the poll, Trump's approval ratings dropped 5 points from merely one month ago, with 37% of likely Michigan voters approving and 57% disapproving of his job performance. His support among Independents fell even further - with 22% approving and 65% disapproving.

Meanwhile, the poll, which was commissioned by Mike Duggan's allies and is more favorable to him than other independent polls, found Duggan is "losing ground" and polled at only 23%. That is a 7% drop from a poll conducted by the same group earlier this year. Duggan's drop comes despite the fact that he's benefited from over $12 million in spending from an outside group set up by his allies.

"This poll is the latest disaster for all of the GOP candidates who are 100% tied to Donald Trump's harmful and deeply unpopular agenda, along with Mike Duggan, who has no path to victory and continues to sink as voters learn how he's backed by MAGA donors and defended core parts of Trump's agenda," said DGA Communications Director Sam Newton. "As the cost of groceries, gas, and health care continue to rise, Michiganders will continue to come to the conclusion that they want another strong Democratic governor who will get real results on the biggest issues they are facing while standing up to the chaos in Washington."

  • The Detroit News: "Likewise, Duggan took more Republican-leaning support in the new survey than he did Democratic-leaning support in the new poll. Duggan got about 24% of the Republican voters but only 16% of Democratic voters, according to the survey's results."
  • Detroit Free Press: "But the survey results may actually show warning signs for the Duggan campaign - he's lost ground since the chamber's previous poll in February… He's seven percentage points worse off in the May survey compared to the February edition."
  • Crain's Detroit Business: "Mike Duggan is now hurting the Republican candidate more than the Democratic candidate by eight points…" pollster Richard Czuba wrote in an analysis of the results.
  • Chad Livengood: "NEW POLL ALERT: @mikeeduggan's campaign for governor slips in new statewide general election poll paid for by his supporters"
  • Dennis Lennox: "Michigan Republicans have stupidly thought Duggan helps them. Now he's taking 24%."
