IAM District 6 Members Support Homeless Veterans in Des Moines

After last year's District 6 HELPS backpack drive for Homeless Veterans Stand Down, IAM members expanded their commitment in 2025 by making the Des Moines Stand Down an official District HELPS event. IAM Locals across the District donated funds, with District 6 matching the contributions, for a total of $1,150 in support, along with donated supplies. For perspective, $750 provides 500 meals for those in need.

Thirteen IAM members from three Locals volunteered, some traveling more than three hours to participate. Together, they helped with registration, food service, security, cleanup, and water delivery for the hundreds of volunteers working the site. In all, more than 500 people were served during the event about half Veterans and half civilians.

"Our veterans deserve more than gratitude, they deserve action," said IAM Midwest Territory General Vice President Sam Cicinelli. "I'm proud of the IAM members in District 6 who stepped up to honor their service by ensuring they and their families receive the support they need."

IAM members stood proudly alongside other volunteers to ensure that Veterans and their families received care, meals, and essential services that will help them through the coming months. District 6 encourages all IAM Districts and Locals to consider supporting Homeless Veterans Stand Down events in their communities. Volunteers are always needed, and the impact is immeasurable.

For more than 25 years, the Des Moines Homeless Veterans Stand Down has provided food, clothing, health screenings, housing referrals, employment assistance, and other vital services to homeless and at-risk Veterans and civilians.
