Its correlation to the market is only moderate, so much of what it does is genuinely its own, but the stock has moved several times as far as the index in both directions.
SanDisk (SNDK) is up 21.4% over the last five trading days against 1.2% for the S&P 500, and a run like that pulls in buyers afraid of missing the rest. The better question is not where it goes next week but how much of that return is the company's own story rather than the market you already own, and what holding it does to your swings.
A Moderate Correlation, And A NAND Cycle Behind It
The stock's correlation to the S&P 500 over the last one and a half years is 0.48. A reading of one would mean lockstep and zero would mean unrelated, so it sits in the middle: part of its direction is the market's, much of its behavior is its own. Gold sits at 0.20 against the stock over the same window, which is what near-independence looks like, and 0.48 is well above that.
The part that is its own is a NAND cycle riding the AI inference build-out. Datacenter went from roughly 12% of the company's bits a year ago to 38% as fiscal 2026 closed, carried by the high-capacity enterprise SSDs that inference workloads lean on, and management says demand from customers is growing faster than supply. Allocation and NAND pricing, more than the economy, set that revenue line.
The cycle does this to the numbers underneath: non-GAAP gross margin was 84.6% in fiscal Q4 2026, up from 78.4% the prior quarter and 26.4% a year earlier, and price, not bit growth, drove most of that quarter's sequential revenue growth.
Nine Times The Index's Volatility, Tilted To The Upside So Far
Correlation measures direction, not distance, and the distance here is unusual. Over the same one-and-a-half-year window, the stock returned roughly 3200% annualized at a volatility of about 116%, against 22% at a volatility of 13% for the S&P 500. That is roughly nine times the index's volatility. Over the past year, SanDisk captured about 665% of the market's gain on up days and about 322% of the market's loss on down days. That tilt favors the holder, though a one-year reading can shift, and a position with this much amplitude can set a portfolio's month even at a modest weight. Spreading that risk across more names has its own limit: diversification benefit tapers off well before a portfolio gets large, so more names is not automatically safer, a point the Trefis High Quality Portfolio is built around.
What To Watch As Contracts Take Most Of The Bits
So the role is a return engine, not ballast, and what comes with that independence is amplitude in both directions. The business is already working against the cycle underneath it. Management expects the multiyear supply agreements it calls New Business Models, signed with eight customers, to carry about 80% non-GAAP gross margin, and to represent more than 50% of bits in fiscal 2027 and about two-thirds in fiscal 2028, so more of the economics is set by contract, not the spot market. The company is trading some pricing upside for years of committed volume, a deliberate attempt to dampen the cycle that produced these numbers. Until that shift shows in the results, what the options market prices as this stock's likely one-year range is a better guide to the swing than the last five days.
The Amplitude Still Needs A System Around It
A holding that moves several times as far as the index can earn its place, but turning that into compounding takes more than conviction in one name. That is what a rules-based approach such as the Trefis High Quality Portfolio supplies. That portfolio has a track record of outpacing the three major indices - the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap, and Russell 2000.
