Inbound I-55 overnight full closure Saturday

CHICAGO - The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that as part of ongoing efforts to repair the bridge carrying Willow Springs Road over the Stevenson Expressway (Interstate 55), in Countryside, an overnight full closure will be required on inbound I-55 near Willow Springs Road, weather permitting, Saturday, Aug. 1. The closures are necessary to safely install steel support beams over the expressway. ​

Starting at 9 p.m. Saturday, inbound I-55 will gradually be reduced to one lane from just before Interstate 294 (Tri-State Tollway) to Willow Springs Road. Between 1 and 6 a.m., the inbound lanes will be fully closed, and traffic will be diverted onto Joliet Road. At the same time, the County Line Road ramp to inbound I-55 and the southbound I-294 ramp to inbound I-55 will close.

During that time, a detour will direct inbound I-55 traffic to exit the expressway at Joliet Road to southbound LaGrange Road (U.S. 12/20/45) to access inbound I-55 and I-294. ​

All lanes and ramps that were closed overnight will reopen by 7 a.m. Sunday. Outbound I-55 will not be impacted. ​

All schedules are subject to change due to multiple factors, including weather. Any updates will be shared with the public as far in advance as possible.

The overall project is expected to be completed in mid to late August. ​

The public can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Alternate routes are encouraged. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.
