egg Power signs UK’s largest onshore renewable energy agreement with Amazon

egg Power, Liberty Global's clean energy infrastructure business, has signed the UK's largest onshore wind Power Purchasing Agreement (PPA) with Amazon.

The agreement for the Chirmorie Wind Farm in South Ayrshire, Scotland, will see Amazon purchase 90MW of wind energy from egg Power, highlighting the growing demand for renewables as part of the UK's energy mix. It is the second long-term PPA egg has signed this year after VMO2 agreed to take power from the Grange solar farm in Suffolk.

egg Power acquired the project rights to Chirmorie, which first had planning approval in 2018, earlier this year and is moving quicky towards getting construction started. The build will benefit the local and national economy with local contractors being used throughout and the wind turbines being sourced from Vestas on the Isle of Wight.

Egg Power's mission is to deliver renewable energy to meet the fast-growing demand for affordable, secure, sustainable electricity from telecoms and digital infrastructure companies.

In January, it secured a £400m non-recourse debt financing facility with NatWest which will be used for the 250MW of solar and wind farms under construction or development. In total it will support up to 500MW of projects in the UK and Europe, as part of an ambition to deliver over 1500MW of clean energy capacity by 2028 under long-term PPAs.

To date it has also acquired the rights to three solar projects across the UK - Grange, Rainsbrook and Rag Lane, which will all support the UK's energy security, by reducing its reliance on imports and helping to meet the energy demands of the grid which keeps the UK connected.

Ilesh Patel, who leads the egg Power business at Liberty Global said: "Signing the UK's largest ever onshore PPA is a landmark moment, not just for us, but for the UK renewable energy sector as a whole. We are just at the beginning of our journey and have the customers, projects and financing in place to continue adding renewables to the UK's energy mix and meet the challenge of this once-in-a-generation opportunity at the intersection of clean energy, AI and digital infrastructure"
