Mayor Carney, Chief Campos Issue Statements Following Tuesday Afternoon Shooting at Wilmington Hospital

WILMINGTON - Mayor John Carney and Chief Wilfredo Campos on Wednesday released the following statements regarding an ongoing investigation into a shooting incident that occurred at ChristianaCare Wilmington Campus on Tuesday afternoon:

"I'm heartbroken for the victims and their loved ones, for the ChristianaCare team, and for the entire city of Wilmington. Violence has no place in our community," said Mayor John Carney. "It's particularly distressing that such violence and tragedy unfolded at a facility with a primary function of providing lifesaving care. Our healthcare workers and their patients should never fear for their safety."

Mayor Carney continued: "While others run away from danger, our law enforcement officers and first responders run toward it. The Wilmington Police Department and partner agencies handled this tragedy with bravery and professionalism, and we owe them a debt of gratitude for their service to our community."

"Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the victims and their families, as well as the ChristianaCare community. Our Victim Services Unit continues to provide assistance during this difficult time, and we stand at the ready to support our partners at ChristianaCare in the days and weeks to come," said Chief Wilfredo Campos.

"I would like to thank all of the Wilmington Police officers who responded to yesterday's tragic incident. Day in and day out, these brave police officers run towards danger to protect and serve our community, and their response yesterday was no different. I would also be remiss if I did not acknowledge the support of all of our partner law enforcement agencies, including the Delaware State Police, New Castle County Police Department, New Castle City Police Department, Delaware Probation and Parole, Delaware Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) Police, our federal partners with the FBI and ATF, and our public safety partners with the Wilmington Fire Department, New Castle County Paramedics, Talleyville Fire Company, Five Points Fire Company, Minquadale Fire Company, and the Brandywine Hundred Fire Company. We also appreciate the support of the Delaware Department of Justice, and the assistance of the Philadelphia Police Department."

Since the press conference hosted by the Mayor and the Wilmington Police Department on Tuesday evening, the suspect has been apprehended in Philadelphia, and his identity was released by WPD on Wednesday morning. Investigators have concluded that this was an isolated, targeted incident, and the ChristianaCare Wilmington Campus is open and fully operational at this time.
