City leaders and community partners gathered for the ribbon cutting of Milner Commons, a 156-unit community offering high-quality homes for residents with modest and fixed incomes. Milner Commons provides apartments for seniors earning 40 to 60 percent of the area median incomesuch as retirees, individuals on Social Security, and older adults living on limited savings.
The community includes elevators, accessible design features, and on-site gathering spaces that support aging in place.
The City helped bring the vision to life with a $5.9 million investment from the City's 2020 Affordable Housing Bond, awarded in 2022. The funding supported construction of the new community, which was completed in 2024.
Milner Commons was developed by DHICin partnership with Milner Memorial Presbyterian Church. As the church's membership declined, the congregation made a thoughtful decision about the future of the property. The land, originally donated by Henry Herman Milner in 1953, would continue to serve the community by becoming affordable housing for seniors.
To honor the site's history, DHIC incorporated brick, pews, and stained glass from the original church into the new building's design.
Affordable housing can make a real difference for seniors living on fixed incomes. Communities like Milner Commons help older adults stay in the neighborhoods they know, close to friends, services, and everyday essentials.
That sense of community was on full display recently when 91 residents came together for a resident-led Senior Prom, enjoying music, dancing, and shared celebration.
Projects like this help solve the affordable housing puzzle, one piece at a time.
