Council suspends date of proposed Oncor rate increase

Published on August 13, 2025

The City Council on Tuesday voted to push back the date of proposed Oncor Electric Delivery rate increases to allow more time to review the changes and establish reasonable rates.

The resolution approved Tuesday authorizes the city manager to cooperate with other cities in the Steering Committee of Cities served by Oncor to hire and direct legal counsel and consultants, negotiate with the company, make recommendations to the City regarding reasonable rates, and direct any administrative proceedings or litigation associated with the rate adjustments.

Current Oncor rates will remain in place during the suspension period.

Background: Earlier this summer, Oncor filed an application with Fort Worth and other cities seeking to increase systemwide transmission and distribution rates.

Oncor's application requests new rates that would produce an estimated $834 million in additional revenue per year systemwide, representing a 13% increase over present revenues, with a 12.3% increase in residential rates and a 51% increase in street lighting rates.

If the City had taken no action, the new rates would automatically take effect. However, state law also allows the City to suspend rates for up to 90 days so that the City may analyze Oncor's request and, following a public hearing, determine whether it is lawful and reasonable.

Oncor is required to reimburse the Steering Committee for reasonable consultant and regulatory costs associated with this review.
