Upcoming Transition to Direct Billing for Residential Waste Collection Services

UNION CITY, CA, April 16, 2025 - Residents should be informed of upcoming changes to the billing process for residential landfill, recycling, and compost collection services provided by Republic Services and Tri-CED. Residents will no longer be billed annually for these services through property tax assessments. Instead, residential customers will begin receiving a quarterly bill from Republic Services in June 2025 for services provided commencing July 1, 2025.

Under the current billing process, residents pay for a full year of service in advance via their property tax bill. With the new billing process, customers will receive a quarterly bill which spreads the payment for service out over the full year into four payments, and offers more transparency and ease in understanding waste collection service costs.

  • To prepare for this transition, residents should anticipate receiving a paper bill in the mail from Republic Services in June for services provided during July-August-September.
  • Residents who prefer to go paperless can sign up now for online bill pay with Republic Services by filling out the form provided here.
  • For frequently asked questions (FAQ) about this change, please view the FAQ handout.
  • Contact Republic Services at (510) 657-3500 for any questions about waste collection service or billing.

The transition to direct billing is part of the City's broader effort to improve service accountability and provide residents with clearer, itemized billing for curbside waste collection.Residents are encouraged to stay informed about the upcoming changes and learn more at www.UnionCityRecycles.org.
