Peterson Avenue bridge repairs begin this week

CHICAGO - The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that starting this week, repairs to the bridge carrying Peterson Avenue (U.S. 14) over the North Shore Channel, in Chicago, will require lane closures. ​

To complete the work, Peterson Avenue will be reduced from two lanes to one in both directions between Lincoln (U.S. 41) and Jersey avenues. The public also should expect various lane shifts on both sides of Peterson Avenue approaching the bridge throughout the project.

The project, which consists of repairing the bridge deck, piers and abutment, installing a new deck overlay and replacing expansion joints and deteriorated sidewalks, is anticipated to be completed in December.

The public can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Alternative routes are encouraged. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.

Over the next six years, IDOT is planning to improve 7,107 lane miles of highway and 8.4 million square feet of bridge deck as part of Rebuild Illinois, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation. Accomplishments through Year Seven of Rebuild Illinois include $25.6 billion of improvements statewide to 24,498 lane miles of highway, 959 bridges and 1,475 additional safety improvements.
