Iowa State Bar Association President Melvin O. Shaw to deliver MLK Jr. lecture at University of Iowa College of Law

In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the University of Iowa College of Law, in partnership with the UI Center for Human Rights (UICHR), is hosting Iowa State Bar Association (ISBA) President Melvin O. Shaw for a special lecture titled, The Lawyer's Role in Combating Injustice: A Call to Action for Future Attorneys. The event will take place on Friday, Jan. 24, from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m. in Room 235 of the Boyd Law Building, located at 130 Byington Road in Iowa City.

Adrien K. Wing, associate dean for international and comparative law and director of the UI Center for Human Rights, will deliver the opening remarks. President Shaw's presentation will explore the vital role lawyers play in upholding justice and advancing civil rights, emphasizing actionable steps for the next generation of attorneys to address systemic inequality and discrimination.

This event is co-sponsored by the UI College of Law, the UI Center for Human Rights, and the Black Law Students Association. Attendance is open to all, and prior registration is not required. A recording will be made available on the UICHR YouTube channel following the event.

The ISBA encourages all members and Iowa legal professionals to attend this impactful lecture or to view the recording afterward. Events like these exemplify the ISBA's commitment to fostering a profession deeply engaged in the pursuit of justice and equality.
