SPARKS, Nev.- The Sparks Fire Department has been awarded a $29,000 grant from the Nevada Fire Chiefs Association (NFCA) to launch a new Green Waste Dumpster program. The program aims to help residents reduce wildfire risk by properly disposing of vegetation and improving defensible space.

The funding is part of the 2025-2026 NFCA Wildfire Risk Reduction Program and will support placing eight green waste dumpsters across the city beginning today, June 23, 2025. Each dumpster will feature educational banners with QR codes linking to resources on wildfire prevention and defensible space strategies. Waste Management will provide the dumpsters at a discounted rate this summer, fall, and again in spring 2026.

"By providing easily accessible green waste dumpsters, we hope to increase community participation in wildfire mitigation," said Sparks Fire Chief Walt White. "The program supports both fire preparedness and community education and is a proactive way to help residents reduce fuels on their property while learning about best practices through our partners at Fire Adapted Nevada and the Living with Fire Program."

The program is strictly for green yard waste and debris, including leaves, branches, and grass clippings, and is free to City of Sparks residents.

Items such as dirt, rock, sod, palm fronds, blackberry, poison oak, stumps, scotch brooms, furniture, appliances, hazardous chemicals, and construction materials are not accepted or allowed in the dumpsters. Individuals responsible for illegal dumping will be held liable for any additional costs.

For more information on dumpster locations, defensible space, fire-safe landscaping, and wildfire prevention, visit cityofsparks.us/greenwaste or scan the QR codes on the green waste dumpsters.
