New Year's Eve can be a fun-filled night of celebration, but don't forget that all that celebration - and the noise that come with it - can also cause anxiety for pets.

To help keep your pets feeling safe and secure, especially when fireworks are happening, please follow the following advice from animal care team at Austin Animal Services:
  • Create a Safe Space - Set up a quiet, cozy area indoors with your pet's favorite bed, toys and maybe some calming music to help mask the noise.
  • Keep Them Indoors - Even pets who are usually calm can panic and run away during loud fireworks. Make sure doors, windows and gates are secure.
  • Update ID & Microchip Info - In case your pet does get out, having up-to-date tags and microchip details greatly increases the chances of a safe return.
  • Stay Calm & Comfort Them - Your pets can sense your emotions. Speak softly, offer gentle reassurance and stay nearby if possible.
  • Avoid Taking Pets to Fireworks Shows - The loud noises, bright lights and crowds can be overwhelming and stressful.
Austin Animal Services will close at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 31, and reopen to the public on Friday, Jan. 2, for Walk-In Adoption & Reclaim with operating hours of 11 a.m. - 7 p.m.
