The severe thunderstorm watch means residents should be prepared for dangerous weather conditions. The NWS warned of damaging winds, tornadoes, isolated hail up to quarter size, and flash flooding in the region. Wind gusts could reach up to 70 miles per hour during the storms. Meteorologists said some storms may continue into northwest Indiana later in the day.

Severe Thunderstorm Watch: What Advisory Says

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago declared an overflow action day. Officials said McCook Reservoir is already about 91 percent full.

Residents are asked to delay water use at home to prevent further strain on the sewer system. Suggested steps include postponing showers, reducing toilet flushes, and waiting to run dishwashers or washing machines until after the storms end.

Meteorologists said Monday's weather will remain hot and humid, with temperatures in the mid to upper 80s and heat index values in the mid to upper 90s.

Rain chances continue through Monday night and early Tuesday. A slight to marginal risk for severe storms remains, with strong winds as the main threat along with heavy rain and isolated tornadoes.

On Tuesday, the region is expected to dry out with partly sunny.
