WASHINGTON, DC - Today, the Supreme Court of the United States is hearing oral arguments regarding whether Donald Trump has the legal authority to impose sweeping tariffs. The case is being heard at a time when Trump's punitive and unpredictable tariffs are exacerbating the affordability crisis in the United States, punishing the country's allies, and harming American clean manufacturing competitiveness.
In response, Sierra Club Industrial Transformation Campaign Lead Harry Manin issued the following statement:
"Regardless of SCOTUS' decision on Trump's tariffs, there is a better, more strategic approach to trade. Congress has a key role to play and should oppose impulsive tariffs that harm the American economy. A president should never be allowed to use tariffs as a vanity project to enrich himself or boost his own ego.
"Sierra Club supports trade dealsthat encourage American innovation in manufacturing and would actually benefit Americans now and in the long run. When implemented thoughtfully and legally, tariffs can be a tool to boost environmental standards that hold foreign and domestic polluters accountable, magnify the benefits of additional clean investments, keep Americans healthy, and support good green jobs here and abroad."
