The 28th Möbius Prize will be all about AI

The 28th Möbius Prize will be hosted by Università della Svizzera italiana from 3 to 5 October at the West Campus Lugano Auditorium. The event will focus on "Choices of Artificial Intelligence" and will discuss how AI is reinventing health, climate, education, work, tourism, and the economy. The 2024 Grand Prix will be dedicated to "Digital and Circular Economy" as well as "Tourism and Culture".

The decision to focus on the word "SCELTE" (choices) written in capitals, explains Möbius Foundation Director Alessio Petralli, is not accidental: "This year we will be talking about SCELTE (choices) in all caps. In Italian, it's the acronym for the worlds that are undergoing important transformations due to AI: Health (Salute), Climate (Clima), Education (Educazione), Work (Lavoro), Tourism (Turismo) and Economy (Economia). We have collaborated with leading experts to create a series of talks that offer insights into potential futures and provide a clear, easy-to-understand explanation of current efforts to bring these futures to fruition or prevent them. To crown it all, the invaluable work of SUPSI students who, with their digital native perspective, are renewing the Möbius Giovani, a laboratory in which to explore various applications of AI, representing a cutting-edge synthesis of the contemporary debate, with a few glimpses of the futures of art."

On Thursday, 3 October, at the MöbiusLab Giovani, students from the Liceo di Lugano 1 will converse on the "Future of Reading" with Giovanni Solimine (bibliographer and expert on the problems of publishing). The same topic will also be tackled in a dedicated conference during Prologo Möbius at Biblioteca Cantonale di Lugano. Starting from Friday, 4 October, the encounters will take place at USI. They will explore the new daily routine where artificial intelligence accompanies us to various locations such as the bank, school, doctor's office, and even on vacation. To accompany participants on this journey, historical Möbius friends such as Gino Roncaglia (computer humanist at the University of Roma Tre) who will discuss the impact of artificial intelligence on the cultural industry and the world of libraries, and new faces such as Maria Ranieri (lecturer in Didactics and Technologies of Education at the University of Florence), Silvia Santini (professor of informatics at USI) and Marco Gaia (meteorologist, head of the MeteoSwiss "Forecasting and Consulting" sector) who will shed light on the revolutions taking place in education, medicine, and meteorology.

Saturday, 5 October will be dedicated to projects in Switzerland and the Swiss Italian-speaking region that have shown excellence in the innovative use of new technologies: the Grand Prix Möbius Suisse "Digital and Circular Economy" and the Grand Prix Möbius Editoria Mutante "Tourism and Culture" will be joined for this third edition by the Grand Prix Möbius for artificial intelligence at the service of society, conceived in collaboration with the Dalle Molle Institute for Artificial Intelligence (IDSIA USI-SUPSI), a world-class centre of excellence.

There will also be room for a "not only digital" moment led by Marco Solari (manager and president of the Locarno Film Festival from 2000 to 2023). This segment will be animated by the thought-provoking questions of Paride Pelli, director of the Corriere del Ticino. It will provide an opportunity to shift our focus to Möbius' home, Ticino, which aims to position itself as a modern and forward-thinking region in tune with the times.
