Dairy foods such as milk and cheese are high in calcium, but so are other foods pictured, such as almonds, broccoli, beans and spinach.

Participants in a Delta Junction workshop will learn to make fresh, dairy-based cheese and other recipes to support lifelong bone health.

Sarah Lewis, professor with the University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service, will lead the workshop.

Calcium helps build bone, which can help many men and women who experience a decrease in bone density as they age, Lewis said. By age 50, 30% of men and 50% of women will experience the early bone loss of osteopenia.

While people often rely on dairy products to fill this need, Lewis will also discuss nondairy foods that offer calcium and other nutrients important for bone health. She will also cover fitness strategies to maintain and increase bone health.

The class is from 1-4 p.m. on Sunday, March 1, at the Delta High School Home Economics Classroom, 1664 N. Clearwater Ave., Delta Junction. The cost is $10.
