Statement from DNC Chair Ken Martin on Steny Hoyer’s Decision to Retire from Congress Arrow

DNC Chair Ken Martin released the following statement after former House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer announced that his current term in Congress will be his last:

"For nearly 60 years, Steny Hoyer has faithfully advocated for Marylanders with dignity, compassion, and a relentless sense of purpose. His career as an appropriator and longtime member of Democratic leadership is full of achievements for the people of his district, the state of Maryland, and our country. From leading the Americans with Disabilities Act and bringing health care to millions of children, to championing human rights and peace around the world, Congressman Hoyer will be remembered as a giant of Congress, a sharp and effective legislator, and a true public servant. As House Majority Leader, he took on the hard job of finding and building consensus to get results for Americans, even in the toughest times. Generations of newly elected House Democrats relied on Steny's mentorship and advice, and I expect that wisdom to continue guiding legislators for years to come. I join all Democrats in recognizing Congressman Hoyer's storied legacy in Congress and thank him for his dedicated service to our nation."
