Military action against Venezuela must be stopped
Statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Cuba has been warning about the growing escalation by the United States government against the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, which clearly seeks to overthrow the constitutional government of President Nicolás Maduro Moros and establish a servile government willing to surrender Venezuela's oil, key natural resources, and national sovereignty to the United States.
Following the illegal destruction at sea of vessels allegedly involved in drug trafficking -the composition and destination of which remain unknown- and the killing of their crew members, the threat of force against Venezuela has intensified with announcements of a new phase of escalation that would include military actions against land-based targets.
The pretexts for this extraordinary and irrational military deployment by the United States are groundless and rooted in deception. It is legally and morally unacceptable to use such claims as grounds for perpetrating a military aggression against a sovereign state. The threats to peace, security, and stability in Our America are real and imminent.
The Venezuelan government has warned of a thwarted plan to attack the United States Embassy in Caracas with explosives, organized by a far-right Venezuelan faction seeking a pretext for U.S. military forces stationed offshore to respond to the supposed terrorist attack on its diplomatic mission. It would not be the first time the United States resorts to such maneuvers to justify military aggression.
Warmongers such as the current Secretary of State and anti-Cuban congress members from Florida irresponsibly threaten to unleash the military might of the United States against a sovereign nation of Our America, as if it were a local police sweep.
Cuba once again calls on the international community to mobilize and stop a military action against Venezuela.
We once again reaffirm our steadfast and unwavering support for the Bolivarian and Chavista government of Venezuela, as well as for the Popular and Military Unity of the Venezuelan people. Latin America and the Caribbean must remain a Zone of Peace.
